Patrick D. Walters

Get to know Orwell's Principal, Mr. Patrick Walters!

Letter to Parents

I’ve been here for three months and it’s time I told you a little bit about myself. I have four children of my own and live in Manchester with two of my sons Dan, twenty-four, and Jeff, sixteen. Brian, who is twenty, plays hockey in San Diego for a Junior A team, and Jennifer, twenty-three, lives in Connecticut with her husband. I love chess, hockey, and baseball, and I am an avid Yankee fan (sorry Red Sox fans). I also enjoy hiking in the mountains with my yellow lab, Sandy.
I have been in education for twenty-two years as a teacher and a school principal. Orwell is my third principalship in the past twelve years and I am passionate about our children’s education, as well as their future. I am a well-balanced administrator blending my expertise in curriculum and instruction, and supervision and evaluation, with management and organizational behavior. I am well versed in budgeting, labor relations, and special education, and have been able to create a collaborative professional climate among my teaching staff.
I believe that in today’s challenging world it takes more than just a good school to educate our children. Research tells us that the children whose parents or guardians share in their education tend to perform better in school. This involvement results in better attitudes, better grades, and more successful programs; in short – better schools. I was fortunate enough to meet many of you during Open House; also I have met many of you at school and talked with many of you by phone or through email. Please stop in to chat and share a cup of coffee with me. I’m interested in you, as well as your children. And I’m here to listen and to be of service to you and your family!
I see many wonderful things here at Orwell, and I am particularly impressed with our students, who are hard-working, respectful, and very personable. Our teaching staff is a highly dedicated and professional team, and the Orwell community has given me an extremely warm and friendly welcome. These qualities translate into powerful student performance, which is in the upper echelon of Vermont schools. Particularly impressive is our strong reading performance, with 88% of our students meeting or exceeding the state level expectations. We are also strong in math, with 76% of our students meeting or exceeding the state level expectations. Orwell students consistently surpass the state averages in science with an especially strong performance by our fourth-graders as 69% have met or exceeded these standards.
I want to make Orwell the best school on the globe for your children. Orwell is a proud school, where students want to come to learn. A proud school, where teachers want to come to both teach and learn. And a school of which parents and community members can be proud.
I am very happy to be here and I thank you for your support.

    Patrick D. Walters, Principal
